ARTISTS STATEMENT

My paintings straddle movements such as: Symbolism, Surrealism, and Visionary Art. Pulling together common language threads, creating my own visual religion, as it were. In a painting such as "Beam" on this web site, I am pulling on the influence of the Symbolists who had a great influence on me at Art College.

I have come to terms with the drama found in the symbolist work of Gustave Moreau; for example, 'Natural Electrics'. I try to Dream the images as I improvise them in a 'Waking Dream'-like manner. In this way I am working in an intuitive way.

I also do a lot of drawing, which I see as keeping me fit for my painting. The first thing I do each day when I get to my studio is draw in my sketch book; this also I find informs my painting. I like to study art from other parts of the world; recently, I have been looking at art works from Asia and Latin America.
